Truecyrpt is no more

TrueCrypt is free disk encryption software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, or that is until yesterday when the Open Source project abruptly came to an end with the following message posted on their homepage

“WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues”

“This page exists only to help migrate existing data encrypted by TrueCrypt.”

“The development of TrueCrypt was ended in 5/2014 after Microsoft terminated support of Windows XP. Windows 8/7/Vista and later offer integrated support for encrypted disks and virtual disk images. Such integrated support is also available on other platforms (click here for more information). You should migrate any data encrypted by TrueCrypt to encrypted disks or virtual disk images supported on your platform.”

Various rumours are spreading, and at this moment they are purely speculation including a hack of the TrueCrypt developers, some Lavabit-like government forced shutdown or and an internal power struggle within TrueCrypt, I hope more details will be released in due course but in the mean time its suggested anyone using TrueCrypt looks at alternative, like BitLocker on newer editions of Windows or OSX’s FileVault
